The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the option to challenge particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative example occurred in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
