The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – emerged earlier this harvest season. In the course of multiple weeks, the American president started showing everyone his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger of the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to build it.
He has done things countless times more severe – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and recently an analysis projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have dared – really, no former commander would have conceived – independently wrecking major areas of the presidential residence in order to erect a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.
We went from 'the meek shall inherit the world' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the leader seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there remains a substantial portion among Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of hostility who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my childhood, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding about him because they identify as atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with these different approaches, nor with different religions; however I believe that contain precious wisdom of great price within Christian narrative.

The evident and direct truth that the Savior of the gospels advocates for a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the needy is what has always made Christianity rather a controversial faith: engaging for the populace, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it practically baptized the status quo.
A Battle for the Best Within Us
So I have been encouraged to see the persistent defiance to Trump develop in this past year. It has served as great solace to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags throughout each rally and appeals to the finest aspects in US history.
