An defense official has revealed that the MoD is currently investigating the possible security risks associated with Chinese cars, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing classified information in any vehicles.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in China-made cars.
The minister stated that the MoD is “looking into” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a classified level in any vehicle, due to the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and sensible thing for everyone worried about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of strong measures and vigilance in all areas of government operations, including vehicle usage to communication habits.
