Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections explains the accelerated regain.
These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on integrated lifestyle changes.
