"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text reads. "My request was to ask if I can become their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. A host of famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the position.

One thing is obvious a special quality is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best ensembles, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos often feature them walking in unison down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such unfettered happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the ultimate honour. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate people to start a band."

"So anyone is invited to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for a top rock honor at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the trio.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "However we're just appreciative for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project came out of a period of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The lyrics detail endings and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice ignoring the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That recent resilience demanded a new sound – more raw and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the percussion.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's openness inspired the album's marketing, where the sisters revealed some of their dating tales.

One man ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana told a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an international following.

Yet the band will forever be their top commitment.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like nothing else that we were destined for. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
