European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
